Gentech designs fuel level sensors for hybrid electric vehicle

A leading American automobile manufacturer turned to Gentech to ensure their state-of-the-art, hybrid-electric sports car had precision fuel detection technology and kept emissions down to a minimum.

Customer requirements:

  • Operating in fuel
  • Flange mounted fuel sensor for one side of the tank and submerged sensor for the other side
  • All stainless steel tubing
  • Low voltage operating system
  • Required to measure fuel levels in a very complex tank

Solution:

Gentech created a unique solution for the car’s saddle fuel tank: two stainless steel fuel level sensors – one flange mounted and the other completely submerged in the tank.

Due to limited space in the fuel tank, narrow stainless steel tubes equipped with reed switches and an external float were employed. The submerged sensor was designed using hermetic seal technology. Connectors and a flying lead completed the assembly to the vehicle wiring harness.

Special features were incorporated in the design to ensure the fuel level sensors could withstand the rigors of an automotive cycle while still providing accurate level sensing.

Benefits of this solution:

  • Capable of adapting to different tank sizes
  • Durable, long lasting, corrosion resistance stainless steel
  • Low cost and proven reed switch technology
  • Fits into tight applications
